Char-Em ISD is pleased to announce another summer camp of informational, exciting and fun-filled College for Kids programs taking place this June! College for Kids is three days of enrichment classes for students in grades 2-8 (current school year, 2017-18) The cost is $80 and includes breakfast and lunch each day and a T-shirt.
The 2018 College for Kids camp will take place June 19-21, 2018, at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey (one class, High Flyers, is taught at Pellston Regional Airport). Classes take place from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.
New easy online registration opens April 9, 2018; the registration link will be posted on this page. Information about courses will be sent home to elementary students, and be made available to middle school students, on April 6, 2018.
2018 Class Offerings
Archaeology: Digging into the Past
Current Grades: 2, 3, 4, 5 | Instructor: Kerri Finlayson
If you enjoy being outside digging and exploring then Archaeology is for you! Students will learn the fundamentals of archaeology through hands on activities such as excavation, making stone tools, designing pottery, and creating Egyptian mummies. This is a class you will really dig!
Chivalry and Swordplay
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: Jeff Watton
Enter the world of medieval knights and study your family’s name and heritage. Design a family crest and learn to use a sword and shield, a mace and flail, and a pike and spear. Learn the code of chivalry and medieval art and dance. Perform action choreography and role-play with safe foam props you make.

Do you love a good challenge and technology? Like creativity and working with your hands? Explore the world of coding and robotics by building, coding, and playing with robots through challenges, competitions, and much more. Learn about free coding resources, too.
Engineering For Your Imagination
Current Grades: 3, 4, 5 | Instructor: Lauren Liebler
Discover the basic concepts of engineering and problem solving through creativity. Students will explore civil engineering, industrial design and mechanics through hands-on activities, including computer modeling and 3D printing.
Fun with Nature
Current Grades: 2, 3, 4 | Instructor: Jessa LaBlance
If you enjoy being outdoors, exploring nature, and being an active observer, you’ll love our daily hikes or outdoor activities to explore animals, birds, plants, landscapes, insects, fish, and more in nature. Dress for the weather and outdoor adventures.
Just the News
Current Grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: Amy Klopf
As student journalists, learn about the newspaper business by interviewing, investigating, and photographing all the exciting activities taking place during College for Kids. Our busy newsroom will produce and distribute a newsletter and webpage recording all C4K activities. Explore local, national, and international current events via the Internet and print resources.
Current Grades: 2, 3, 4 | Instructor: Cindi Place
Students will read books, poems, and essays each day and then create a craft that goes along with the stories they read.
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: Lewis Robinson
Mix, measure, heat, and record your way to becoming a future “mad” scientist in this class. Conduct a variety of exciting experiments with items found around the house – fit eggs into bottles, make edible fake vomit, cook edible glass, make Play-Doh, and more. Learn the chemistry behind experiments and weird science facts.
Public Safety Challenge
Current Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: James Cousino
Each day, students will learn hands-on activities taught by Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and Law Enforcement professionals. Patient simulators, mock crime scenes, and investigations are part of this exciting class. See actual fire trucks and ambulances and try out the equipment they use. Respond and investigate a simulated crime scene, look for evidence, interview suspects, and catch the bad guy!
Rube Goldberg Machine Class
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: Becky Lipchik
The Rube Goldberg Machine Class will let students explore their creativity while engineering a homemade machine to perform a specific task. The machine will be made from everyday household items such as paper towel tubes, marbles, dominos, string, buckets, cards, toy cars, and anything and everything the students can think of to use. The students will work in groups and at the end of C4K we will put each group’s creation together to make a big awesome machine! It will be a fun, hands on science+art+engineering class!
Tourist in Your Own Town
Current grades: 4, 5, 6 | Instructors: Alex Childress and Beth Anne Eckerle
Do you love Northern Michigan and want to share its beauty with the world? We do, too! You will learn basic photography skills first, then we will visit some of Petoskey’s most treasured spots to capture photographs and videos. You will also learn how drone photography can bring your images to a whole new level! Next, we’ll turn your images and video into promotional pieces for social media,YouTube and print brochures. Cameras will be provided, or bring your own! Students are also welcome to bring their own phones for video.
Current Grades: 2, 3, 4 | Instructor: Natalie Hebden
Explore “What’s Up?” with life in northern Michigan and how information, alerts, and emergencies come to life in our everyday world. Take a trip to TV 9&10’s newsroom to learn how to broadcast the news, weather, and sports. Visit with local disc jockeys from Lite 96FM to learn which songs to play when. And, see where 911 calls are answered to find out how police, fire departments, and medical emergency staff know where, when, and how to help serve the people in Northern Michigan.
Pellston Regional Airport
Current Grades: 6, 7, 8 | Instructor: Dean Paul
Come fly with us and navigate the exciting world of aviation in this high-flying class and be introduced to the basics of flying. Hands-on activities include drone simulators, flight simulators, and even building a hot air balloon. Weather permitting, you will fly with a real pilot. Do not wait to book your ticket or you might miss the flight!
